The 40TH annual new river canoe race
The 40th Annual New River Canoe Race and Family Float was held Saturday June 4th, 2022 at 9 am. Click here to see official race times.
The event began at Zaloo’s Canoes in Jefferson, NC on the banks of the beautiful New River and travel five miles to the Wagoner Road Access of the New River State Park. This route is calm with no white water. This Ashe County tradition is sponsored by generous donations from community sponsors.
All proceeds from the race support Friends of High Country State Parks’ mission to support our state parks.

About the Race
Gates open at 8:30 am at Zaloo's Canoe in Jefferson (336) 246-3066
Boats can enter the water from 9 am to 1:30 pm.
Please note boats with children need to be in no later than 1 pm.
The race ends at New River State Park, Wagoner Access in Jefferson (336) 982-2587.
The awards ceremony and door prize drawings will be held at 3:00 pm
Registration is $15 per person, $5 for children, and $25 for family float (up to 6 people) for a single race. Every additional race is $5. Registration includes a FREE T-shirt and entry for a door prize. Entry fees this year are CASH ONLY. There is NO PRE-REGISTRATION. Registration will take place on the day of the race. The first 200 registrants will receive a free t-shirt and be entered to win one of many fabulous door prizes that will be given at the 3 pm awards ceremony. (You must be present to win!)
Enter with a Canoe or a Kayak. Bring your own boat or rent one at a discounted price from Zaloo's Canoes. Zaloo's will provide free shuttles. Click HERE to visit Zaloo's website.
This is a family friendly event with options to enter as a "Family Float", “Novice”, “Expert”, or “Championship” cateogry. The “Special” category is for those with any special needs. The average time for new paddlers on this 5 mile stretch of river is around 1 hour. Many contestants with advanced skills have completed the race in less than 45 minutes. The race will take place rain or shine!
Music, free food samples, tubing, swimming, or hiking can all be found at New River State Park until the 3pm Awards Ceremony. You do not have to race to enjoy these fun activities! Food from local food trucks will be available.
